Pros and Cons of Using Invisalign

Pros and Cons of Using Invisalign to Straighten Your Teeth

TeamInvisalign

There’s no denying that Invisalign has revolutionized orthodontic treatment. For decades, those with imperfections in their smiles only had one option for improving the function and appearance of their smiles: metal bracket braces. After earning FDA approval in 1998, Invisalign quickly became the orthodontic treatment of choice for millions of adults, and eventually teens. So, is Invisalign the best orthodontic treatment? What are the downsides of Invisalign? Read on for a comprehensive list of the pros and cons of using Invisalign to straighten your teeth.

Pros of Using Invisalign to Straighten Your Teeth

Invisalign offers a variety of benefits. Firstly, because the alignment trays are removable, you’re able to enjoy all of your favorite foods, while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Next, and perhaps most obviously, Invisalign offers a great deal of discretion while undergoing treatment.  Bracket and wire braces are immediately noticeable and difficult to disguise in photos. By contrast, patients who clean their Invisalign trays regularly enjoy nearly invisible orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign also offers a unique oral health benefit, when compared to bracket and wire braces. Because the trays are removable, you can easily brush (clean) the entire surface of your teeth while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Likewise, you will not face any obstructions while flossing your teeth. The ability to brush and floss normally may contribute to better oral health while improving the appearance and function of your smile.

Invisalign also offers enhanced comfort for patients, thanks to smooth, BPA-free plastic trays. The smooth trays are gentle on the soft tissues inside the cheeks and lips, which makes it a non-abrasive orthodontic treatment.

You will also require fewer orthodontic appointments with Invisalign compared to traditional bracket braces. This is because there are no wires that must be tightened by your orthodontist.

Cons of Using Invisalign to Straighten Teeth

Invisalign’s biggest weakness is severe misalignments, gaps, or malocclusions. Invisalign is only recommended for minor to moderate alignment issues with the teeth, or bite.  A severe overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite should be treated with traditional braces.

The other potential downside of Invisalign doesn’t actually have anything to do with the treatment. It has to do with patient compliance. Since Invisalign trays are removable, it is up to patients to abide by their treatment plan and wear the trays at least 20-22 hours per day. The trays should only be taken out when brushing, flossing, eating, or drinking, or to replace with a custom sports guard while engaging in sports activities. If you suspect that you may not follow directions, or if you think your teen may not follow directions, it’s in your best interest to opt for a different orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign is generally a bit more expensive than metal braces. Finally, Invisalign is best suited for those who are responsible and organized. Trays left unattended may be destroyed by pets, or excessive heat (such as a car in the summer). Trays may also be lost, which can prolong treatment time.

Does Invisalign straighten teeth faster than braces?

For those with minor to moderate alignment problems, Invisalign often straightens the teeth faster than bracket braces, as long as you wear the trays as prescribed by your orthodontist.
